Study Resources

Pilot Starting Materials

For your Private Pilot or Sport Pilot certificate, you will need these resources below:

  • Private Pilot ACS or Sport Pilot PTS (paper or in the ForeFlight documents)

  • Flight bag or backpack

  • Logbook (Jeppesen Pro Pilot Logbook, recommended)

  • Headset (Bose A30's, recommended)

  • iPad (Mini, recommended)

  • ForeFlight Subscription, send me a text for 10% off (Essential Plan recommended)

  • Kneeboard

  • Fuel Stick (20 gallons for C-172, 12 gallons for C-150. Each aircraft has different size tanks)

  • Jar Fuel Tester (for sumping fuel)

  • E6B and plotter

  • Paper Arizona VFR sectional chart

  • ASA Private Pilot Oral Exam Guide (blue cover)

  • 2026/current FAR/AIM (paper or online app)

  • PHAK and AFH (paper or free online PDFs)

  • Not necessary but portable charger and night handlamp with red or green light recommended.

For your Instrument Rating, you will need these resources below:

  • Commercial Pilot ACS (paper or in the ForeFlight documents)

  • Foggles or hood

  • Instrument Flying Handbook and Instrument Procedures Handbook (paper or free online PDFs​

  • ASA Instrument Pilot Oral Exam Guide (red cover)

For your Commercial Pilot Single-Engine Land certificate, you will need these resources below:

  • Commercial Pilot ACS (paper or in the ForeFlight documents)

  • A copy of AC 120-12A (in the ForeFlight documents)​

  • Commercial privilege's flow chart (in the ForeFlight documents)

  • ASA Commercial Pilot Oral Exam Guide (orange cover)
